A History of Matakana

David R Grant

with Helen Jack

"We Gathered Here is a carefully researched and well documented book for all who value history.... David’s decision to build his book around ‘gathering places’ seems quite unique.  The approach highlights the way Matakana settlers developed a sense of community and identity....

...His six year journey reveals his deep appreciation of the calibre of our forebears."   Neville Johnson

It is with great sadness that we advise that the author David Roy Grant passed away on 4 June 2019, peacefully in his sleep.

He left a great legacy, one major part being the book We Gathered Here.

He will be sadly missed.

"A meticulously researched history of Matakana"  Mahurangi Matters, 1 Nov 17

We Gathered Here traces the history of Matakana village from the earliest settlers through to the mid-1980s when the first grape vines were planted.

Centred on the gathering places in the village, the book paints a picture of a vibrant and tight- knit rural community who together faced the rigours of settler life in establishing a village community, and could say, ‘This is our gathering place.’

At over 500 pages, the book draws on memoirs, newspaper reports, minute books, photo collections and personal memories, David Grant tells the stories of lives, loves, fears and achievements lived – the stories that shape the Matakana community today.

If you have enjoyed We Gathered Here you can read more of David's writing in Lakeside Conversations, a book of conversations between a granddaughter and grandfather, which was posthumously published in November 2019
